BRAIN HEALTH and Essential Oils Class at Healthy Kids Pediatrics

I loved getting to share with a bunch of moms and dads at Dr. Bain's Healthy Kids Pediatrics office in Frisco today!  Dr. Bain has been an amazing help to our family over the past 8 years.

We talked about the benefits of Essential Oils and Brain Health.  Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions or want to learn more.

Here are some of the studies that have been done on these oils:

Essential Oil & Brain Health Studies
Sleep & Anxiety
-Lavender:    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24720812  A majority of the study findings suggested a positive effect of essential oils on sleep.
-Lavender & Roman Chamomile:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23476690  Outcome measures patients' state anxiety, sleeping quality, and BP. An aromatherapy group showed significantly low anxiety (t = 5.99, P < .001) and improving sleep quality (t = -3.65, P = .001) compared with conventional nursing intervention.
-Lavender:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25230519  LvEO significantly increased the striatal and hippocampal levels of 5-HT and decreased turnover rates in accordance with the anxiolytic behavioral changes.

Mental Fatigue  &  Concentration
-Peppermint, Basil, and Helichrysum: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23140115  The results suggest that inhaling essential oils may reduce the perceived level of mental fatigue/burnout.
- Research indicates that peppermint aroma, inhaled during mental tasks, may help attention, performance, and focus.  (Barker, et al., 2003)
-Terry Friedmann, MD, found in preliminary clinical tests that Vetiver may be successful in the treatment of ADD and ADHD in children.  (Friedmann 2002)

Memory & Accuracy
-Dr. Dember conducted a study at the University of Cincinnati in 1994 showing that inhaling Peppermint increased mental accuracy by 28 percent.
- In a study done by Dember, et al., 1995, Cardamom (found in Clarity) was found to enhance performance accuracy.
-University of Miami scientists found that inhaling Rosemary boosted alertness, eased anxiety, and amplified analytic and mental ability.

Attention & Focus
-Between 1999-2001, Terry Friedmann, MD, conducted a case study with children between the ages of 6-12 years old. Twenty children not diagnosed with ADHD or ADD were the control group, while twenty children with a confirmed diagnosis of ADHD or ADD were in the study group.
Essential oils were administered by inhalation three times a day for 30 days. In addition, an inhalation device to administer continuous inhalation of oils at night. Each subject was tested on a single oil for 30 days and then reevaluated, until all oils of the study had been tested. Oily combinations were also used – again for a 30-day period.
The results were amazing. Dr. Friedmann found that inhalation of Vetiver improved the performance of children with ADHD or ADD by 100%. Lavender improved performance by 53%, and Cedarwood improved performance by 83%.
-Research indicates that peppermint aroma, inhaled during mental tasks, may help attention, performance, an d focus (Barker, et al., 2003)
-University of Miami researchers found that inhalation of lavender oil increased beta waves in the brain, suggesting heightened relaxation.  It also reduced depression and improved cognitive performance.  (Diego MA, et al., 1998).
-A 2001 Osaka Kyoiku University study found that lavender reduced stress and increases alertness (Montomura, 2001).
-Research indicates that peppermint aroma, inhaled during mental tasks, may help attention, performance, and focus (Barker, et al., 2003)

Blood/Brain Barrier
The overall results showed that compound 1 displayed a dose-dependent inhibition of BACE-1 in cellular and mouse models of Alzheimer's disease and is therefore capable of passing through cellular membranes and the blood-brain barrier.
